I’m Jane Hirst, an illustrator, collage artist and surface decoration designer.

I graduated in ’96 from UEL with a BA Hons in Textile Design and Surface Decoration with Art History.

As a graduate I exhibited my work at The New Designers Show at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London. From this platform I began working full time with My Sugar Cube Design Studio in Shoreditch, London, where I worked for over 11 years.

I have continued to work in the industry ever since and now freelance from my home studio in lovely Devon. As well as specialising in illustration and surface decoration for various markets including stationery and children’s textiles I also paint digitally and work as a collage artist. Living by the sea, and so close to the blue water of Cornwall is also a constant source of inspiration.

My artistic style

Like many Illustrators I have developed my personal style or ‘hand’ as my career has evolved. Digitally I always work in Adobe Photoshop using translucent brush strokes and charcoal lines. I love to build layer on layer and erase as much as I draw to create the lines and watercolour effects which define my work. My collage artwork enables me to create differently: I enjoy the hands on approach of using papers, recycled elements and my own designs to make textured original pieces.
